Clunes House

Dja Dja Wurung Country
(Stage 1 Built)

The first stage of Clunes House took an existing modular building, sited it on a new site and brought it back to life with minor additions for better function and responsiveness to its new site.

The modular building is long, the new site is small, the climate is cold.

With these constraints the building is tucked down into the slope, lessening its height and opening up to the northern aspect.

Some Architects - Clunes House, east façade, simple, site responsive architecture.
Some Architects - Clunes House, external brick floor, prioritising landscape, connection to outside.
Some Architects - Clunes House, site plan, maximising solar access on a tight site.
Some Architects - Clunes House, site aerial, sense of journey through architecture.

The second stage (not yet constructed), is a small studio for visiting family and friends. Sited to maintain a northerly aspect and pick up views over town, it was also important that the studio be private from the main house.

The studio needed to be compact with smart use of space, with built in eating and sitting areas, a small study area and ample storage. The form maintained simple lines with a gable roof juxtaposed against the rectangular modular building. This allowed for simple structure with cut away walls beneath providing protected outdoor areas.

Some Architects - Clunes House, studio floor plan, small, smart residential architecture.
